Lack of awareness can destroy good intentions. Environmental cues that often go undetected can affect thoughts and behaviors. Make a list of all the things in your physical environment that slip you up and circumvent your goals. Then make a commitment of what you will do instead and write it down.
Self-sabotage behavior is most recognizable by the experience of an internal "tug-of- war" between having a desire to do something and feeling like you can't or shouldn't do it.
Any time you hear yourself say, "I want to do this, but I can't or I shouldn't!" this is the inner conflict of self-sabotage behavior.
Remove instigating objects. This will help eliminate environmental obstacles that sabotage your goals. Let’s use weight loss as an example; if you identified junk food in your cabinets as a source of cravings, then throw away the junk food and don’t buy any more.
Replace the negative obstacle with a positive one. Bring healthy snacks to work and avoid the unhealthy snacks. If commercials on TV make you hungry, pre-record your favorite shows.
Repetition emotion and environmental cues. Associate a positive emotion with the new object or habit. If you want to lose weight and you have been shopping at the same supermarket for years buying junk food, you might want to find a new place to shop - perhaps a local farmer’s market. If you cannot physically have the vending machine removed, then bring a healthy snack and avoid the vending machine.
